The tradition of Karmayogis has been going on in India for ages. The ancestors of our Kayasth community were great Karma Yogis, great philosophers, great men and scholars. He remained hard-working, led a simple social and restrained life and continued doing charity through his knowledge and deeds. Not only this, they have been making their work better by making themselves better through knowledge and spirit of action and hard work and have been especially helpful in building India through their knowledge and deeds. The tradition of people with these great qualities is still the same in Kayasth society. Even today, people with great qualities are present in our society.

If we look at the history of India, Swami Vivekananda, who represented Sanatan Dharma in the World Religious Conference held in Chicago, awakened the spiritual powers lying dormant in the minds of people and founded the “Ram Krishna Mission”. Spiritual Guru Paramhans Yogananda, who preached “Kriya Yoga”. Shrimad Abhay Charanarvind Bhakti Vedanta Swami Prabhupada, who founded “ISKCON” (International Society for Krishna Consciousness). Yogi and philosopher Guru Sri Aurobindo, who was a revolutionary in the Indian freedom struggle and later became a yogi and wrote commentaries on the Vedas and Upanishads. Swami Shraddhanand, a patriotic sanyasi, dedicated his life to freedom, self-rule, education and Vedic religion. He founded “Gurukul”, an institution imparting education in Vedic religion and Indianness, in place of the education system introduced by the British. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the father of modern India, a pioneer of religious and social renaissance, who founded the “Brahma Samaj” and strongly opposed child marriage, Sati system and other social evils. Rai Bahadur Saligram, also known as Huzur Maharaj, was a prominent follower of the “Radha-Swami spiritual movement”. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of “Transcendental Meditation Yoga”, founded the Maharishi Open University and started online education through the satellite of Maharishi Broadcasting using modern technology and issued “Ram Mudra” through his institution. The currency named “Ram” has one, five and ten rupee notes which are recognized in the Netherlands. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was the first among the architects of India’s independence, who formed the “Azad Hind Fauj” by calling for “Give me blood, I will give you freedom” to fight the British in the Indian freedom struggle and gave the slogan of “Jai Hind” which is the national slogan of India today. Lala Hardayal, a leading revolutionary of the Indian freedom struggle, who founded the “Gadar Party”, ignited the spirit of intense patriotism among the expatriate Indians. Fierce revolutionary Ras Bihari Bose, who organized the Ghadar conspiracy and the Azad Hind Fauj against the British Raj. Khudiram Bose was the youngest and most ardent young revolutionary patriot to be hanged for Indian independence. Vipin Chandra Pal, Chittaranjan Das, Bidhan Chandra Rai, Leela Rai, Lala Hanumant Rai, Barindra Ghosh, Pullin Bihari Das, fearless journalist Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, India’s first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who was the chairman of the drafting committee of the Indian Constitution, have been addressed as Desh Ratna. Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan (JP), Indian freedom fighter, who ignited the spirit of “total revolution” against the Indian government. Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri, the originator of the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’, who is remembered with reverence all over the world for his simplicity, patriotism and honesty. India’s famous scientist Dr. Jagdish Chandra Basu who increased the knowledge of physical biology, botany and archaeology and worked on the optics of micro radio waves. He is called the father of radio science. Famous scientist Dr. Shantiswaroop Bhatnagar who made mechanical toys, electronic batteries and wired telephones. The greatest Indian writer Babu Devkinandan Khatri who wrote works like the mysterious novel Chandrakanta and Bhootnath. Mahadevi Verma, the world’s most talented poetess, considered one of the main pillars of the Chhayavad era in Hindi literature, who was also called the modern Meera and Saraswati of the huge temple of Hindi. Novel emperor Munshi Premchand who laid the foundation of the realistic paragraph. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, the leading poet of the post-Chhayavad era, whose most famous work is ‘Madhushala’ and he is the father of the famous actor of the Indian film world, Amitabh Bachchan. Writer of film script Mr. Natwar Lal, Kamleshwar, famous Urdu writer Raghupati Sahay ‘Firaq Gorakhpuri’, famous litterateurs and writers Bhagwati Charan Verma, Dharamvir Bharti, Bimal Roy, Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena, Gopal Das ‘Neeraj’, India’s first woman pilot Miss Prem Mathur, cricketers Ramesh Saxena, Suvrat Guha, Shiv Sundar Das, Gopal Das, badminton players Raman Ghosh, Deepu Ghosh, famous music composer S. D. Varman, Anil Vishwas, Chitragupta, Panchamda R. D. Varman, Aadesh Shrivastava, playback singers Mukesh, Manna Dey, K. L. Sehgal, Salil Chaudhary, actors Motilal, Utpal Dutt, A. K. Hangal, Bimal Roy, Nutan etc. are all known to be descendants of Chitragupta.

We are the progeny of 12 sons born to Lord Chitragupta, the son of the creator Brahma, from his two wives. In the Patal Khand, Chapter 31 of the Padma Purana, it is mentioned that as per the order of the creator, Lord Chitragupta performed penance in the Panchkoshi area on the banks of the Kshipra river in Ujjaini, due to which Lord Shiva, pleased with him, blessed him that “Shri Chitragupta will be the almighty god and his descendants will never disappear from the earth”.

So, even in ancient times, most of the kings and rulers were Kayasths. In the Raghukul kingdom of Tretayuga, Kayasths were the main rulers for eleven generations. King Dasharath’s ministers Sumant and Kamaldatt, Ravana’s royal physician and minister Sushen, King Ramchandra ji and King Luv’s minister Chitransh Chaksh, King Kush’s minister Somdatt, and in Dwaparyuga, Yogiraj Krishna’s minister Tanpura Das, King Aja’s minister Rangji, Maharaj Pandu’s minister Susharma and Sutji were from the Kayasth clan. It is well known that the boon of voluntary death was given to Bhishma Pitamah by Lord Chitragupta. In the history of ancient times, Chanakya and his disciple Chandragupta Maurya’s chief minister Mudra Rakshasa, Magadh emperor Jaichand’s prime minister Shaktar, emperor Vikramaditya’s chief commander Brahmakant, king Vikramaditya’s justice minister Buddhikant Mathur, Prithviraj Chauhan’s minister Udaykant, king Bhoj’s minister Buddhisagar, Samarth Guru Ramdas, Jahangir’s ministers Chaturbhuj and Purushottam Das, Shahjahan’s ministers Lala Ajmeri Das and Raghunath Das, emperor Akbar’s nine gems minister Birbal, king Tongar Mal, poet Ban Bhatt, author of the books Harshcharit and Kadambari during the tenure of king Harshvardhan, famous astronomer Aryabhatta in the Gupta period, etc. are also descendants of Chitragupta. An archaeological report of 1803 states that Pushyamitra, the ruler of the ‘Shukra Dynasty’ (Kayasth Dynasty), was the emperor of Magadha in 185 BC.
